Dr. Eric Silvio Chong completed general cardiology training in National University Hospital (NUH) Singapore in 2008. He has been a registered cardiologist since then. He was the first Singapore cardiologist to win a First Prize of the Young Investigator Award Competition in the Asia Pacific Congress of Cardiology in 2007. In 2009-2010, Dr. Chong received the Singapore Ministry of Health Scholarship and underwent advanced interventional cardiology, coronary angioplasty and cardiac pacing fellowship at the leading St Thomas’ Hospital, London UK. He was trained under the proctorship of internationally famous interventional cardiologists Professor Martyn Thomas, Professor Simon Redwood, who are the past and current presidents of the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society and chief authors of the Oxford Textbooks of Interventional Cardiology. He also performed cardiac pacing under the training of Professor Aldo Rinaldi, who is an international expert in advanced cardiac pacing and a core member of the European Heart Rhythm Association.

Upon returning to Singapore, Dr. Chong set up and pioneered 24/7 acute heart attack angioplasty services in the restructured hospitals in 2010 and 2011. He performed the first primary angioplasty and managed the first coronary care unit patient during the set up of the new restructured hospitals. He was appointed as the director of cardiac catheterization lab and the director of cardiology service respectively. The acute coronary angioplasty service provision was well recognized by the hospital management.

Dr. Chong has performed coronary angioplasty cases with successful complex interventional cases involving high-risk patients with multiple comorbidities. These include some of the coronary interventional cases rejected by cardiothoracic surgeons due to the extreme high-risk nature for bypass surgery. He has performed complex angioplasty cases which include left main stenting, multi-vessel angioplasty, rotablation for heavily calcified lesions, antegrade and retrograde angioplasty to chronic total occlusion, angioplasty to bifurcation and graft lesions, modern hybrid angioplasty in collaboration with cardiothoracic surgeon for multiple lesions and intervention to critically ill patients requiring intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) and extra-corporal membrane oxidation (ECMO).

Dr. Chong is a frequent user of adjunct advanced interventional imaging equipments, which include pressure wire, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherent tomography (OCT). He was an invited speaker on the use of optical coherent tomography in major cardiology meeting in the Philippines in 2014. Dr. Chong is an elected Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology (FAPSIC) and a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI) in the USA. Dr. Chong has published a list of research papers in the journals of interventional cardiology, which include leading journals such as the American Journal of Cardiology, Journal of Interventional Cardiology. His interventional cardiology research papers in the area of contrast nephropathy won the gold medal publication research award in the Annals of the Academy of Medicine Singapore in 2010, third Prize in the Singapore Medical Journal in 2012 and first prize in the Singapore Cardiac Society Oral Clinical Research Presentation in 2015 respectively. He was one of the chief leads in the multi-center interventional cardiology research CONTRAST trial.

Dr. Chong has been an advanced coronary angioplasty trainer in restructured hospitals. He has coached local and foreign interventional cardiology trainees from China, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Myanmar, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, and Indonesia. He has been a core member of the Cardiology Angioplasty Device subcommittee, Heart Attack Committee and Cardiology Committee in the Ministry of Health.

In 2012, Dr. Chong underwent further invasive electrophysiology, cardiac pacing, basic and translational cardiac arrhythmia research fellowship at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital. He was trained under the proctorship of world-renowned electrophysiologist, Professor Shih-Ann Chen, who was the immediate past president of the Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society and the co-founder of invasive atrial fibrillation treatment involving pulmonary vein ablation. Dr. Chong was trained in the radiofrequency ablation of cardiac arrhythmias including supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), atrial flutters (AFL) and atrial fibrillation (AF). He is competent in using advanced 3 dimensional mapping systems and has exposure in epicardial ablation and complex ventricular tachycardia ablations. In addition, he is accredited in implantation of pacemakers and implantable cardio-verter defibrillators (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). During his training, Dr. Chong won the third Prize of the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Young Investigator Research Award. He also published high quality clinical papers in international electrophysiology and pacing journals such the Europace, International Journal of Cardiology and Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology.

Dr. Chong runs regular cardiac arrhythmia and pacemaker outpatient clinic. The clinic provides outpatient pacemaker-programming and follow up service as well as arrhythmia management service to the patients. In 2013, Dr. Chong obtained international accreditation and recognition in his competency and expertise in electrophysiology and cardiac device management by receiving level II competency certification in cardiac pacing from the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) and the board certification in both electrophysiology and cardiac device management from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE). His name has been published in the respective websites from these international societies. Furthermore, Dr. Chong maintain his international recognition by publishing his research paper in the field of atrial fibrillation in the high impact Tier 1 international cardiology journal including the Heart Rhythm and International Journal of Cardiology.

In addition to his accreditation and experience in both interventional cardiology and electrophysiology sub-specialties, Dr. Chong also performs ambulatory and imaging cardiology service on a regular basis. He has been running ambulatory cardiology and echocardiogram reporting on a daily basis. He is experienced in Holter reporting, treadmill reporting, ECG analysis, heart rhythm event device monitoring, loop recorder monitoring, signal average ECG analysis, tilt table testing, ambulatory blood pressure reporting, transthoracic echocardiogram, contrast echocardiogram, bubble echocardiogram study, exercise stress echocardiogram and pharmacological stress echocardiogram supervision and reporting. Furthermore, he was accredited for both renal dennervation for invasive hypertension therapy and trans-esophageal echocardiogram in 2014.
